"This project aims to restore the dynamic landscape created by wind and sand in the sandbreak forests of Tottori Sand Dunes. Historically, the dunes were an environment where strong winds and shifting sands constantly renewed the terrain and vegetation. However, the sandbreak forests, established and expanded to prevent sand drift, while suppressing sand movement, have altered the dunes' unique environmental conditions, leading to the decline of native plants and the simplification of the ecosystem.
This proposal aims to restore sand flow by creating wind corridors within the windbreak forests. Using static sand barriers as mediators, it'll encourage the re-invasion and renewal of native vegetation. Rather than humans completing the landscape, the goal is to establish conditions where the landscape itself continues to change. This isn't about fixed preservation, but a landscape practice that reframes conservation as a cycle."
